The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has issued a strong call to action, urging women across Nigeria to join forces in combating the pervasive issue of human trafficking.
During a working visit to the Safe Centre and Women Development Centre in Asero, Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Minister expressed deep concern over the large number of Nigerian girls trafficked abroad under false pretences of lucrative employment, who are now stranded in various countries.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasised the critical role mothers and community leaders play in raising awareness and safeguarding young women.
She passionately appealed to women to cherish their daughters and help reverse the disturbing trend by highlighting the dangers of illegal migration and the opportunities available within Nigeria.
“Our daughters are living in several countries, taken out under the guise of getting them employment. Let’s please hold our daughters to our hearts; there are lots of beautiful opportunities for them in Nigeria,” she stated.
The Minister stressed that many trafficked girls are forced into demeaning and criminal enterprises, and their absence represents a significant loss to the nation’s development.
Furthermore, the Minister praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing the status of women, noting consistent increases in budgetary allocations for women’s development at both the federal and state levels.
She outlined the administration’s ambition to foster a new generation of female billionaires, entrepreneurs, and professionals, aligning with the national goal of building a $1 trillion economy.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim concluded by reinforcing the message that Nigerian women can achieve success at home and contribute significantly to the nation’s growth, provided they are protected from exploitation and given the right opportunities.
