Dr. Doyinsola Abiola, the pioneering journalist and widow of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, was laid to rest on Friday in Lekki, Lagos.
Her interment followed a solemn funeral service held at the historic Cathedral Church of Christ on Marina, drawing a close to a week of tributes that celebrated her immense contributions to journalism and public service in Nigeria.
The week of remembrance began on Tuesday at Harbour Point on Victoria Island, where family members, professional colleagues, and close associates gathered to honour her groundbreaking career and steadfast character.
The final funeral service, officiated by Ven. Henry Adelegan, Canon Residentiary of the Cathedral, was a solemn occasion filled with scriptural reflections. Readings included Psalm 91, delivered by Midun Tobun, and an Epistle from 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, read by Suru Aboaba.
In his sermon, the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. Pelu Johnson reflected on Dr. Abiola’s profound legacy under a theme of restoration and hope.
He eulogised her as a celebrated “record-breaker who shattered glass ceilings,” highlighting her historic achievements as Nigeria’s first female Ph.D. holder in journalism, the first female editor of a national daily, and the first woman to lead a national newspaper in her dual role as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the National Concord.
Bishop Johnson also praised her unwavering support for her husband during the nation’s struggle for democracy, noting how the Concord Newspapers served as a powerful voice for freedom under her leadership.
He stated that her enduring legacy lives on through the countless journalists and individuals she inspired and mentored throughout her life. Furthermore, the Bishop used the platform to call upon the government to address pressing national issues such as insecurity, unemployment, and corruption, urging leaders to work toward easing the burdens faced by citizens.
