The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reported significant gains in its counterinsurgency operations in Borno State, neutralising at least 592 terrorists and destroying 372 assets over eight months.

Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff, disclosed these achievements during a meeting with Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

The operations, conducted under Operation Hadin Kai, involved 798 combat sorties and over 1,500 flight hours targeting terrorist enclaves and supply routes.

Air Marshal Abubakar stated that precision airstrikes successfully destroyed 206 technical vehicles and 166 logistics hubs in remote areas, dealing a major blow to the operational capabilities of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The Air Chief further revealed that the recent deployment of a new Mi-35 attack helicopter would enhance close air support for ground troops, improving the effectiveness of joint operations against insurgents.

Governor Zulum praised the NAF for its critical role in improving security across the state, which has enabled the gradual return and resettlement of displaced communities.

He emphasised the importance of sustained military operations to consolidate these gains and restore lasting peace in the region.

The reported successes come as part of Nigeria’s intensified counterterrorism efforts in the Northeast, where insurgent groups have waged a violent campaign for over a decade.

The military has increasingly relied on coordinated air and ground operations to degrade terrorist networks and secure vulnerable populations.
