The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, Isyaku Barau, has voiced concerns over the conduct of vigilante groups in Niger State, emphasising the need for proper training on rules of engagement and best practices.
Barau made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the state Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, where he led a delegation to discuss pressing security issues.
While commending the police for their efforts in curbing thuggery, Barau highlighted the growing concerns surrounding vigilante groups, urging the police to provide them with structured training to ensure their operations align with legal standards.
“These non-state actors should be enlightened and trained on rules of engagement in line with best practices and the rule of law,” he stated.
The NBA chairman also praised the contributions of the command’s former legal officer, CSP Jude Akaeze, in prosecuting cases and urged the police to sustain such professionalism.
Additionally, he stressed the need for improved exhibit management in prosecutions, recommending that trained officers handle the unit for better efficiency.
Other discussions centred on strengthening police-lawyer collaboration and enhancing the skills of investigating officers. In response, CP Elleman reaffirmed his commitment to human rights and continuous personnel training.
He also noted ongoing efforts with the Attorney-General’s office to retain police prosecutors, given the high volume of cases. The meeting underscored the importance of synergy between security agencies and legal practitioners in maintaining law and order.
