The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted a historic certification to the Gateway International Airport in Ilisan-Iperu, Ogun State.

The facility has been issued the nation’s first-ever Aerodrome Operational Permit (AOP), a significant milestone that designates it as the first airport in Nigeria to achieve this status under the authority’s enhanced regulatory framework.

In a further development, the airport’s navigation systems have received official approval following a successful flight inspection.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) conducted the review on September 4, 2025, and declared the Instrument Landing System and Distance Measuring Equipment (ILS/DME) installed on Runway 23 as “totally satisfactory in all respects.” The system has been cleared for unrestricted use, which is critical for guiding aircraft during approach and landing, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, described these achievements as a major validation of his administration’s strategic vision to position the state as a central hub for commerce, investment, and global connectivity.

He emphasized that the success of the Gateway International Airport is not just a victory for Ogun State but for the entire nation, calling it a symbol of progress and a new benchmark for aviation infrastructure in Nigeria.

These certifications are expected to transform the airport into a major player in the national aviation sector.

The approvals promise to enhance safety and operational reliability, provide local farmers with direct international market access, create new job opportunities for the youth, and help alleviate congestion at the busy airports in nearby Lagos. This development firmly establishes Ogun State as a leader in aviation development, setting new standards for infrastructure, safety, and global competitiveness.
