The Deputy Director General of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Salisu Mohammed, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a national state of emergency in response to the escalating insecurity affecting the entire country.
Mohammed made this urgent appeal during an appearance on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ program on Thursday, emphasising that the security situation has reached a critical point that demands immediate and exceptional measures.
Mohammed explained that the insecurity, which initially plagued the northern regions, has now metastasised into a nationwide crisis.
He argued that the conventional security architecture has been completely overwhelmed and is no longer sufficient to address the magnitude of the threat. Therefore, the situation requires a declaration of a national emergency to enable a more drastic and comprehensive response.
The NEF representative stressed that tackling this deep-rooted insecurity necessitates a whole-of-society approach. This would involve not only the deployment of military and police forces but also the active engagement of citizens and all segments of society.
He believes that a broader strategy, facilitated by the special powers of an emergency declaration, is essential to mobilise resources, coordinate efforts, and implement solutions that go beyond traditional security operations.
This call to action reflects growing concern among regional leaders about the persistent violence and instability. The Forum is urging the federal government to acknowledge the severity of the crisis and adopt an unprecedented strategy to restore peace and security across Nigeria.
