The Director-General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has expressed fear over reports of ethylene oxide found in Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavor‘. Following the revelation by Malaysian and Taiwanese authorities, the National Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) sounded warnings about the imported product.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye applauded NAFDAC for quick intervention and investigation into the matter.

According to the Professor, the effect will depend on how long they have been consuming this product.  However-

“Nigerians should expect an escalation of various forms of cancers in the months or years ahead”

The NICRAT DG ascertained that in 2020 alone, 78,000 citizens died as a result of cancer-related complications (34,200 men and 44,699 women).

The DG pledged to collaborate with NAFDAC in ensuring the safety and protection of Nigerians from cancer-causing agents, stating-

“We will further collaborate with NAFDAC in ensuring the safety and protection of Nigerians from cancer-causing agents”.

Aliyu advised people to follow NAFDAC guidance on the ban and consumption of ‘special chicken flavoured’ imported Indomie Instant Noodles.

Ethylene oxide is a highly reactive chemical used in the manufacture of glycol ethers, polyglycol ethers, emulsifiers, detergents, and solvents.

Carcinogenic compounds are also used as fumigants for cleaning kitchen utensils, spices and medical equipment. They are especially damaged by heat sterilization.
