Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has reaffirmed the critical need to encourage the Fulani community to embrace modern cattle ranching practices as a sustainable solution to improve livestock management and reduce insecurity caused by farmer-herder conflicts.

The governor made these remarks during a significant meeting with representatives from various Fulani organisations, led by the Madako Foundation for Conflict Resolution and Empowerment, at the government house in Minna.

Governor Bago emphasised that transitioning from traditional pastoralism to structured ranching represents the most effective and contemporary approach to animal husbandry.

He detailed how this modern method could substantially increase income for pastoral families through enhanced value chain production, including improved meat and dairy processing, better veterinary services, and access to more profitable markets. This shift, he noted, would not only boost economic prospects but also significantly diminish the tensions between farmers and herders that have long plagued the region.

Beyond agricultural reform, the governor strongly advocated for educational advancement within the community.

He praised the Madako Foundation’s initiatives aimed at increasing school enrollment among Fulani children and called upon educated members of the Fulani population to contribute to upgrading nomadic schools in Niger State. The meeting concluded with expressions of mutual commitment to collaboration, as Dr. Abubakar Umar Girei, representing the Lamido of Adamawa, commended Governor Bago’s inclusive approach and pledged the community’s cooperation in working with the government to promote peace and security throughout the state.
