Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has expressed deep concern over the frequent occurrence of fatal boat accidents within the state’s riverine communities.
He described the recurring tragedies as profoundly painful and, more importantly, entirely avoidable.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor attributed the majority of these incidents to human negligence.
He specifically identified two critical and recurring safety breaches: the dangerous overloading of passenger boats and the refusal by both operators and passengers to wear life jackets.
Governor Bago emphasised that strict adherence to established safety protocols on the waterways would significantly reduce the frequency of such devastating accidents.
The governor’s comments included a direct message of condolence to the families affected by a recent boat mishap in the Borgu local government area. He expressed his heartfelt sympathy to those who lost loved ones and offered prayers for the swift recovery of individuals who sustained injuries.
Governor Bago assured the grieving communities that the state government shares in their sorrow and stands in solidarity with them during this difficult period.
Furthermore, he acknowledged and commended the swift action of emergency responders. His praise extended to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority, and the local community volunteers and divers whose courageous efforts were vital in the immediate rescue operations following the accident.
