The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 145 deaths from Lassa fever in Epidemiological Week 25, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.6%. This marks an increase from the 17.6% CFR recorded during the same period in 2024.

The latest data, published on the agency’s website, covers infections reported between June 16 and 22 across 20 states and 101 local government areas.

Out of 5,943 suspected cases, 781 were confirmed as Lassa fever. The current reporting week saw 10 new confirmed cases in Ondo and Edo States, slightly higher than the eight cases reported the previous week.

The NCDC noted that 91% of all confirmed cases in 2025 originated from five states: Ondo (31%), Bauchi (24%), Edo (17%), Taraba (16%), and Ebonyi (3%).

Young adults remain the most affected demographic, with the 21–30 age group bearing the highest burden. Males were slightly more impacted than females, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.8.

The NCDC identified late hospital presentation, high treatment costs, and poor health-seeking behavior as key factors contributing to the rising fatality rate. However, no new infections among healthcare workers were recorded during the reporting period.

Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic illness, is endemic in Nigeria and spreads primarily through contact with rodents or contaminated food.

The NCDC continues to urge early diagnosis and treatment to reduce fatalities, emphasising the need for improved public awareness and healthcare access in high-risk areas. The latest figures highlight ongoing challenges in controlling the disease despite efforts to strengthen surveillance and response mechanisms.
