Nigeria and South Africa have launched joint measures to combat illicit drug trafficking between the two nations.
The nations will strengthen connections in order to detect and prosecute syndicates operating in Nigeria and South Africa.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the nation’s anti-narcotics agency was in negotiations with its equivalent in South Africa in the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, widely known as HAWKS, to bring this to fruition.
“As part of efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking between Nigeria and South Africa, senior officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, have held a two-day meeting with their South African counterparts in the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, popularly known as HAWKS, to forge stronger operational ties that will herald tough times for drug syndicates operating between the two countries,” the statement read.
NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd), represented by the agency’s Secretary Shadrach Haruna, said the conference will reinvigorate efforts to combat the worldwide drug issue.
After the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding will be developed by the two organisations, he stated.
