Nigeria’s team has won seven medals in the recently ended All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Cairo 2024, with Anuoluwapo Opeyori, the country’s top badminton player, claiming his fifth African crown.
Opeyori previously won the All Africa Senior Championships Men’s Singles title in Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 2019, the All Africa Games MS title in Morocco in 2019, the All Africa Senior Championships MS title in Uganda in 2022, the All Africa Senior Championships in South Africa in 2023, and now in Egypt in 2024.
Nigeria’s male team barely lost to Algeria in the finals, settling for silver.
After losing in the semifinals to the Ugandan Women’s team, the Women’s team took home a nice bronze medal.
In the Individual event, Nigeria’s Opeyori advanced to the finals by defeating compatriot Victor Ikechukwu 21-13, 19-21, 21-9, reigniting an old rivalry with Mauritian Georges Julien Paul, whom he defeated 23-21, 11-21, 21-16 to win the coveted MS crown for the third time in a row and fifth African title.
Yunusa Momoh and Godwin Olofua, a relatively young pair, represented Nigeria well by defeating Melvin Appiah and Tejraj Pultoo of Mauritius 21-17, 21-15 in the finals.
