The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians against actions that might result in man-made catastrophes. Ahmed Audi, the Corps’ Commandant-General, issued the warning on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to Audi, the Corps has initiated a statewide campaign against construction on rivers and indiscriminate rubbish disposal in water channels.
He stated that the sensitisation effort was a preventative measure to avoid flood disasters that might occur across the country when rainfall intensifies.
Audi said:
“This advocacy campaign which began at the NSCDC headquarters, down to some Area Councils in Abuja, is a proactive measure to mitigate against flooding associated with rainy seasons.
“It is so unfortunate that people dump refuse while some erect structures along waterways and without properly channelling the tide, during flooding, this can lead to loss of lives and property.”
Audi also stated that the Corps was saddled with the legislative obligation of disaster management and rescue operations, which was a significant reason why the campaign had become critical to the Corps.
“We engage in rescuing victims in the face of emergency and provide security for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, during distribution of relief materials to victims or displaced persons,” he added.
