Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa has reassured Nigerians that the military and other security agencies are firmly in control of the security situation in the North-East, despite a recent resurgence of insurgent activities in the region.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Maiduguri, General Musa acknowledged the recent uptick in attacks but emphasized that these incidents should not cause undue alarm.
He attributed the increased activity to pressure on terrorists in the Sahel region, which has led to heightened attacks in Nigeria, particularly around the porous borders of the Lake Chad Basin.
Musa highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring peace and development across the country.
He noted that during his recent trip to Russia, Nigeria maintained a non-aligned stance but engaged with key stakeholders willing to partner in the fight against terrorism.
He announced that more sophisticated weapons have been procured and will soon be deployed alongside new strategies to combat terrorism effectively.
During his visit, the CDS also assessed the situation at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, where explosions had occurred at the armoury due to heat waves.
He met with senior military officials from the Theatre Command Sector 1 Operation Hadin Kai at the 7 Division, Maimalari Cantonment, to discuss ongoing operations and strategies.
General Musa called on all Nigerians to support the military’s efforts, stating that security is a collective responsibility.
He urged citizens to join the fight against Boko Haram, ISWAP, banditry, kidnapping, and all forms of criminality to achieve lasting peace and development in the country.
