NiMet unveils centralised SADIS platform to enhance Aviation safety

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has successfully implemented a centralised Secure Aviation Data Information Service (SADIS) API platform, marking a significant technological advancement for the nation’s aviation sector.

This achievement positions Nigeria as a pioneering force in modern aviation weather technology across the African continent.

The new platform represents a substantial upgrade from the previous legacy system, enhancing flight safety, strengthening operational efficiency, and aligning the country’s aviation meteorological services with stringent international standards.

Professor Charles Anosike, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, commended the dedicated efforts of the ICT team and all participants involved in the project.

He emphasised that this innovation underscores the agency’s leadership in adopting modern technologies that are critical for aviation safety and efficiency while ensuring full compliance with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

Operated by the UK Met Office under the remit of ICAO, the SADIS API provides programmatic access to essential World Area Forecast System (WAFS) datasets and other vital meteorological information.

It replaces the older FTP system with a modern, System-Wide Information Management (SWIM)-compliant platform capable of delivering higher-resolution data in real-time.

This system supplies key aviation datasets, including critical information on icing, turbulence, cumulonimbus clouds, tropopause height, jet streams, volcanic ash, tropical cyclones, and operational reports such as METAR and TAF.

The transition grants Nigerian aviation stakeholders more secure and instantaneous access to essential forecasts, charts, and observations. This reliable flow of information supports safer, more efficient, and cost-effective flight operations throughout the country.

By integrating this advanced technology, Nigeria not only future-proofs its aviation weather services but also sets a regional benchmark for technological adoption and operational excellence in aviation meteorology.
