NLC President Ajaero seeks policy consistency in education sector

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has urged the federal government to establish policy consistency in the education sector.

He referenced the current HND/BSC dichotomy dilemma as an example of policy contradiction in education sector.

Ajaero made the statement on Friday at the 2024 International Teachers Day event in Abuja, which was organized by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU. He emphasized the importance of revisiting education policy and viewing education as self-sufficient.

He stressed the significance of technical education, adding that HND should not be eliminated, and tasked the Ministry of Education with allocating appropriate funds to improve facilities and maintain job security.

The NLC president promised to back the union’s campaign for greater teacher benefits across the country.

While dissatisfied with the N40,000 minimum salary for state officials, Ajaero argued for a wage that met fundamental necessities.

“We need a wage that will help everyone pay their bills,” he told me.

To accomplish this, Ajaero suggested that COEASU work with the Ministry to get a more favourable budget from the National Assembly.

He also urged the Ministry to address the issues made by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and uphold the agreement struck to avert strikes.
