The attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero has prompted the organised labour unions, which include the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to call for a nationwide strike.

The leadership of the NLC and TUC announced the development at a briefing in Abuja on Friday. They presented the Federal Government with a 6-point demand, which included the immediate removal of the Area Commander and Commissioner of Police for Imo State, among other police officers, for their alleged roles in the brutalization and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.

The nationwide strike is scheduled to start on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

According to reports, the NLC President was apprehended and subjected to abuse on Wednesday during the planned labour demonstration in Imo State.

Ajaero was taken away by men from the Nigeria Police Force and later appeared with injuries on his face, indicating that he had been abused.

Speaking on the development on Thursday, NLC Publicity Secretary Benson Upah said Ajaero could not be treated at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri, due to the severity of his injuries, necessitating the need to transfer him abroad for treatment.
