The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has pointed out that the majority of the nation’s 17 million housing deficit is located in the North.
At the end of the first-ever Kaduna International Housing Exhibition on Thursday, the Speaker made this statement. He called on all levels of government to support affordable housing programmes in order to help the homeless and said that housing for all people is a fundamental right.
The Speaker said:
“Available data shows that Nigeria has a housing deficit of 17 million housing units in urban centres, with Northern Nigeria accounting for the largest share of this deficit.”
The Speaker, who was represented by the Chairman House Committee on Housing and Habitant, Abdulmumini Jibril.
He said Nigerians must discover creative and sustainable ways to close the enormous gap in the provision of shelter to the people.
The exhibition’s topic, “Kaduna Sustainable Housing Development: A Model for Northern Housing,” is very relevant to the difficulties that Nigerians are now confronting, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
The Speaker stated that adequate housing is more than just a basic human need; it is a fundamental right that underpins sustainable development and social cohesion. He also stated that sustainable housing development entails creating communities that are environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and economically viable.
