Former presidential candidate and past chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Chief Peter Ameh, has asserted that Northern Nigeria would be receptive to Peter Obi’s potential presidential campaign in 2027.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Ameh highlighted Obi’s growing influence in national political discourse, noting that the former Labour Party candidate consistently leads surveys as a preferred contender for the next election.
“Peter Obi currently dominates public discussions and drives the political narrative heading into 2027,” Peter Ameh stated. He dismissed regional voting patterns observed in the 2023 election, where Obi secured 44% of Southern votes compared to 15.2% in the North, as outdated, emphasising that competence should outweigh geographical considerations.
“Today, no party debates potential candidates without Obi topping the list. The focus should shift from ethnicity to character, compassion, and responsible governance,” he added.
Ameh contrasted Obi’s nationwide appeal with Rabiu Kwankwaso’s 2023 performance, noting the latter garnered only about one million votes nationally.
He criticised the misallocation of public resources as a key governance failure, arguing that leadership must prioritise citizens’ welfare over regional or ethnic affiliations.
The remarks come amid growing speculation about Obi’s political future, with his grassroots support and anti-establishment messaging resonating across demographic divides.
As Nigeria’s next election cycle approaches, Peter Ameh’s analysis suggests a potential recalibration of traditional voting blocs, with Obi positioned as a unifying figure capable of bridging the North-South political divide.
