The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kwara State Command began a statewide public awareness campaign Monday with the goal of lowering fire breakouts during the harmattan season.
Ayoola Michael Shola, the command spokesperson, said the action was taken in reaction to the recent spike in fire occurrences in the state capital, Ilorin.
The awareness-raising campaign was carried out by the NSCDC’s Crisis Management Department via its Disaster Management Unit.
The program’s goal, according to Chibuzo Odeyemi, Head of the Disaster Management Unit, is to inform the public about efficient fire prevention, readiness, and response techniques in high-risk locations including marketplaces and densely populated neighbourhoods.
NSCDC staff visited Ipata Market, Oja Oba Market, Mandate Market, Oja Tuntun, and Shao Garage as part of the initiative. They spoke with vendors, drivers, and the public about common fire causes, like incorrect handling of flammable materials, while highlighting crucial safety precautions and emergency response protocols.
She also revealed that NSCDC has a legislative duty to handle catastrophes and rescue efforts, and it has run a number of awareness campaigns on human behaviour that causes disasters and urged people to refrain from it.
In order to prevent fire-related mishaps during the season, she further advised all residents to follow the safety instructions given and to be alert.
