The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has praised Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for increasing the monthly allowance for corps members serving in the state to N20,000.

The DG expressed his appreciation during a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House in Enugu, where he also thanked the state government for the ongoing reconstruction of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu.

Nafiu described these gestures as clear demonstrations of the governor’s support for the NYSC scheme. He explained that his visit to Enugu was part of a working tour to inspect the orientation camp and gain firsthand insight into how orientation activities are conducted.

The visit also aimed to assess the safety and welfare of staff and to strengthen the relationship between the state government and the NYSC.

The director-general noted that Enugu State provides a conducive environment for corps members, with many choosing to remain in the state after completing their service year. He disclosed that 11,116 Enugu State indigenes are currently serving across the country, while 5,636 corps members from other states are serving within Enugu.

In response, Governor Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the reconstruction of the Awgu Permanent Orientation Camp, which holds historical significance as Nigeria’s first orientation camp established in 1973.

The governor emphasised the importance of the NYSC scheme in fostering national unity and integration. He also highlighted the various contributions of corps members to the state’s development programs, particularly in the healthcare and education sectors.

The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, confirmed that medical corps members, including doctors and nurses, have already begun receiving increased allowances of N80,000 and N40,000, respectively, with the N20,000 allowance for other corps members to be implemented soon.
