Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has inaugurated the Governing Board of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI), describing it as more than an educational institution, but rather a movement aimed at reclaiming Africa’s leadership narrative.
The event took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo emphasised that Africa’s most significant asset is its people. With the right leadership and collaboration, he believes there is no limit to what the continent can achieve.
Drawing from over seven decades of experience in leadership development, he highlighted that the persistent leadership gap has often been the difference between progress and stagnation, peace and conflict, prosperity and poverty.
The former president acknowledged the contributions of notable African leaders, including Ghana’s President John Mahama, Mauritius’s President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, South Africa’s former President Kgalema Motlanthe, and Senegal’s former President Macky Sall, for their roles in advancing leadership development across the continent.
Obasanjo outlined the mission of OOLI as equipping leaders at all levels with the necessary skills, understanding, technology, values, and vision to transform nations individually and the continent collectively.
He described the institute as a hybrid entity, drawing beneficial aspects from military discipline and academic rigour, yet maintaining a unique approach tailored to Africa’s specific needs.
The establishment of OOLI represents Obasanjo’s commitment to addressing the leadership challenges that have hindered Africa’s development.
