Dr. Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili, a former Nigerian Minister of Education and globally recognised advocate for transparency and good governance, has received a fresh international appointment as an Advisor to Club de Madrid.
The announcement was made by Oby Ezekwesili on May 20, 2025, through her official social media platform, where she expressed both gratitude and enthusiasm for the new role.
Club de Madrid is the world’s largest assembly of former democratic presidents and prime ministers. It is a prestigious organisation that seeks to leverage the experience and influence of its members to promote democratic values, inclusive governance, and sustainable development around the globe.
The forum brings together former heads of government from various countries to share insights, offer solutions, and contribute to global stability and prosperity.
In her announcement, Oby Ezekwesili highlighted the relevance of such platforms in addressing the leadership and governance challenges facing the world today.
She commended the continued dedication of former democratic leaders who use their experience and stature to foster meaningful progress and collaboration across borders.
Ezekwesili’s background includes a distinguished career in public service and international development. She previously served as Vice President of the World Bank’s Africa Region and is a co-founder of Transparency International.
She also led the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign and is the founder of the #FixPolitics Initiative and the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG), both of which focus on promoting ethical leadership and political reform in Nigeria and beyond.
With this new appointment, Oby Ezekwesili is expected to contribute to the mission of Club de Madrid by supporting initiatives that strengthen democratic institutions, promote good governance, and address global challenges through informed, inclusive leadership.
