In a heartfelt gesture, the Ogun State Government has extended its condolences and support to the families of 22 athletes from Kano State who tragically lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
The accident occurred when the bus carrying the athletes veered off the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway, resulting in the death of at least 22 individuals and injuring several others.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State dispatched a delegation led by Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele to Kano to convey his sympathy and deliver financial assistance.
Each bereaved family received a donation of ₦1 million. The delegation also included Secretary to the State Government Tokunbo Talabi, Commissioner for Sports Wasiu Isiaka, and Executive Secretary of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Kweku Tandoh.
Upon arrival, the Ogun State delegation was received by Kano State Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu AbdulSalam Gwarzo, who expressed gratitude for the support and revealed that Governor Abiodun had earlier called to express his condolences.
The tragic incident has drawn national attention, with President Bola Tinubu describing it as a devastating blow to the nation and emphasising the need for improved transportation safety standards.
Former Kano State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje also expressed his sorrow, calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and the implementation of stronger safety protocols to protect athletes during future national events.
The National Sports Festival, a biennial event that brings together athletes from across Nigeria, aims to promote unity and athletic excellence.
The loss of these promising athletes has cast a shadow over the festival and highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures for participants travelling to and from such events.
