In a significant move to promote equitable representation, social justice, and the prohibition of discrimination against vulnerable groups, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission Bill for a second reading.
The proposed legislation, titled H.B. No. 923/OG/2025 – The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2025, seeks to enforce fair representation, eliminate discrimination, and foster development across all sectors by ensuring equal opportunities for all individuals.
Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi, the bill’s sponsor, emphasised that the initiative is a timely intervention to institutionalise inclusive governance and accelerate statewide development.
According to Ajayi, the bill will specifically address systemic barriers faced by marginalised groups, ensuring their active participation in societal growth.
Supporting the bill, Chief Whip Omolola Bakare and Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye highlighted its role in empowering persons living with disabilities and reducing the marginalisation of vulnerable populations. They stressed that the legislation aligns with broader efforts to create a more inclusive society.
Speaker Oludaisi Elemide reiterated the importance of addressing systemic disadvantages faced by marginalised communities, particularly in public infrastructure, which often excludes persons with disabilities.
He emphasised the need for gender mainstreaming and inclusive policies to bridge existing gaps.
Following deliberations, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Women’s Affairs and Social Development for further legislative action. If enacted, the DEI Commission would serve as a pivotal body in advancing equality and social justice in Ogun State.
