Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission or INEC in Ogun State, has died.
Ijalaye slumped and died on Monday evening, following a meeting of RECs at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to an anonymous source within Ogun INEC, the Ondo-born REC retreated to his hotel room following the meeting before the event occurred.
It was said that Ijalaye, clad in a blue-striped kaftan and a crimson headgear, enthusiastically engaged in all talks at the conference.
The conference, chaired over by INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu, concentrated on two off-cycle gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states, as well as seven open seats in the National and State Assemblies.
Ijalaye was appointed as the REC of Ogun State in March 2022, following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos State.
The commission has yet to publish a confirmation statement about the alleged death.
