Ola Oresanya, Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, has announced that the state is working to transform nearly 3,000 tonnes of waste product into fuel.

Oresanya said this while addressing at the 2024 World Environment Day commemoration on Wednesday.

The subject for this year’s festival is “Achieving the Smart City Agenda through Climate Change Resilience and Urban Afforestation”.

According to the commissioner, the state was on course to be the first in the nation to turn garbage into energy sources.

He said:

“We are taking a bold giant step in making sure that over 3,000 tons of waste generated in Ogun State daily is converted to fuel for our cement industries and we are doing this with the support of our main sponsors today, Gasco Marine, which is also into CNG production.

“We are all poised to make sure that Ogun State will be the first state in Nigeria where we have zero waste and where all our waste would be converted to energy source.

“We are also determined to create a new line of economy that will take advantage of the possibility of a circular economy through green finance mechanisms for decarbonization.”

Prof. Zachariah Yaduma, Director-General of the Nigerian Forestry Research Institute, noted during his presentation that the state must have efficient energy usage, appropriate urban planning, and green infrastructures, among other things, to attain a smart city.
