Public schools in Osogbo, Osun State, shut down early Tuesday in response to an order from the Nigeria Labour Congress, which asked staff to go on strike.
Students heading home from their different schools in town were visible at 9 a.m. on the streets of Stadium, Ayetoro, and West Bye pass, Osogbo.
However, on a visit to certain urban schools, instructors were spotted in their different offices after the pupils had been sent home.
Fakunle High School in Osogbo, Saint James Grammar School, and Adenle Grammar School in Ayetoro Area, Osogbo were among the schools visited.
None of the teachers approached agreed to comment on record.
However, a couple of them who spoke but requested anonymity said they had returned to work only to be informed by labour officials that the strike had begun.
Speaking to newsmen, Johnson, a male teacher, said:
“We can’t hold back the students when the labour leaders came around and asked us to shut down operations. The students have been released but many teachers are still around the premises.”
Osun NLC acting chairperson Modupe Oyedele stated that workers in the state totally adhered to the strike mandate.
“Workers in Osun complied fully. Osun is in full compliance with the strike directive,” She said.
Meanwhile, armed police officers were seen at key spots throughout Osogbo in an apparent attempt to maintain peace and order.
Although police officers were stationed at Lameco Junction, Old Garage, and the Olaiya Area of Osogbo, commercial operations continued unabated in the places visited by our correspondent.
