The Osun State House of Assembly has approved the Electricity Bill 2025, paving the way for the creation of a state-level Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee power generation, transmission, and distribution within the state.
The bill, an executive proposal, was passed on Monday during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, following its third reading.
According to a statement issued by the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, the bill’s passage marks a significant step toward decentralising electricity regulation in Osun. Once signed into law, the legislation will empower the state to establish its own regulatory body, enabling greater control over power infrastructure and services.
The motion for the bill’s third reading was moved by Majority Leader Kofoworola Adewunmi after Taofiq Olayiwola, representing the Committee on Water Resources and Energy, presented the committee’s report.
In addition to the electricity bill, the Assembly also approved amendments to laws governing the Osun State Customary Courts of Appeal, Customary Court, and District Customary Courts.
The proposed changes were deliberated upon and passed following motions moved by lawmakers Tajudeen Adeyemi, Sikiru Bajepade, and Folorunsho Ogundare, among others. Speaker Egbedun conducted a voice vote, with members unanimously endorsing the legislative amendments.
The passage of the Electricity Bill aligns with broader efforts to enhance energy autonomy and improve service delivery in Osun. By establishing its regulatory framework, the state aims to address power challenges more effectively and attract investments in the electricity sector. The move also reflects growing momentum among Nigerian states seeking greater control over critical infrastructure amid ongoing national grid inefficiencies. Once operational, the Osun State Electricity Regulatory Commission will oversee licensing, tariffs, and compliance, ensuring a more structured and efficient power supply system for residents and businesses.
