Nigerian music executive Paul Okoye, popularly known as Paulo, has spoken out against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) repeated arrests of celebrities over Naira abuse, calling it an attack on cultural traditions.
In a response to a post by Cubana Chief Priest, Paulo expressed his disapproval of the EFCC’s actions. He wrote:
But why? It’s not making sense. It’s our culture for fck sake.”
Paulo’s comments come in the wake of the EFCC’s recent arrest of businessman E-Money, accused of spraying US dollars—a violation of the Foreign Exchange Act. Reacting to the incident, Cubana Chief Priest extended support to E-Money, drawing parallels to his own experiences with the commission. He assured E-Money of resilience, stating that such challenges only make one stronger.
Nollywood actor Okon Lagos also joined the discourse, questioning why spraying dollars on Nigerian soil would be deemed problematic. He pointed out the irony of the Naira being undermined daily by the dollar and urged the EFCC to shift its focus to prosecuting corrupt leaders responsible for Nigeria’s economic challenges.
This isn’t the first time the EFCC has targeted high-profile figures over money-spraying traditions. Last year, the commission filed charges against Cubana Chief Priest for violating the Central Bank Act of 2007 by spraying and tampering with the Naira at a social event. Similarly, Bobrisky, a popular crossdresser, faced jail time after pleading guilty to a similar offense.
