PDP moves to expel Wike over anti-party activities, cites petitions and internal review

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has initiated steps to remove Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), from its ranks, citing allegations of anti-party activities.

The party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed that a disciplinary committee has been constituted to review petitions against Wike, with many members arguing that the PDP would be stronger without him.

Abdullahi emphasised that the party is determined to address any actions undermining its progress, stating that individuals who obstruct the PDP’s interests “are better off out of the party.”

He noted that Wike remains a member but has become a liability due to his alleged sabotage, particularly during the 2023 elections, where he and other G-5 governors reportedly worked against the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The disciplinary committee, led by former Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi, is reviewing multiple petitions accusing Wike of destabilising the PDP, including his controversial remarks about “putting fire” in states governed by PDP members. Abdullahi described these statements as “disappointing and unacceptable,” further fueling calls for his expulsion.

While the committee’s findings are pending, Abdullahi asserted that the PDP would not hesitate to act decisively, stating, “Once the committee recommends expulsion, there’ll be no stopping us.”

The party aims to reinforce discipline and unity, particularly as it prepares for future elections. However, some members, like reconciliation committee member Segun Sowunmi, have urged caution, warning that mishandling the situation could deepen divisions.

The move against Wike reflects broader tensions within the PDP, as it seeks to reconcile internal factions and redefine its opposition strategy ahead of 2027. The outcome of this disciplinary process could significantly impact the party’s cohesion and public perception.
