Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party from southern Nigeria have clarified that the party has not yet reached any decision regarding whether the southern region will produce the party’s next presidential candidate.
They emphasised that the National Executive Council will address the matter of zoning the presidential ticket during its upcoming meeting on Monday, along with other important party issues.
The statements were made during a PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit held in Lagos on Thursday, attended by several key party figures. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who spoke at the event, indicated that the party would not engage in public disputes with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and instead would focus on reconciling all aggrieved members.
Makinde stated that when people “go low” in their rhetoric, he refuses to join them, emphasising that the party would reach out to everyone to foster unity.
The gathering included significant political figures such as Governors Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State and Peter Mba of Enugu State, along with former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, former National Deputy Chairman Bode George, and former governors Udom Emmanuel, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Sam Egwu.
The leaders maintained that the primary focus should be on building a strong and functional party structure before discussing presidential candidates. They believe that with a united and credible party, the PDP can present a viable alternative to Nigerians and ultimately regain power from the ruling All Progressives Congress. The consultative meeting exemplified the party’s commitment to inclusivity and carrying all stakeholders along in the decision-making process.
