The families of three young men who suffered severe injuries, including amputations, after being struck by a drunk driver in the Rayfield area of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, demanding justice for their relatives.

The victims, identified as Isaac Dung, Nathan Bayei, and Chomo Dachung, were returning from watching the Arsenal versus Manchester United football match on August 17 when the tragic incident occurred. The driver, alleged to be intoxicated, lost control and rammed into a building’s fence, causing catastrophic damage to the young men’s legs.

According to a family spokesperson, the situation has been described as inhuman and deeply distressing. Two of the victims required immediate amputation of their legs, while the third was left paralysed.

They are currently receiving care at the Potters Specialist Hospital in Jos. The families expressed outrage over the handling of the case by authorities, noting that the driver was initially arrested but was subsequently released to a surety who promised to cover the medical expenses.

However, after paying only two million naira of the estimated eight million naira medical bill, the surety, Mr. Bulus Damul, disappeared and has ceased all communication.

Jemimah Bayei, a sister to one of the victims, confirmed that the driver’s guardian had initially agreed to foot the entire medical bill but has since reneged on the commitment.

The families allege that the driver, who comes from an influential background, was released without their knowledge, further complicating their pursuit of justice and financial support for the extensive medical treatments required.

The petition to the Inspector General of Police calls for urgent intervention to ensure accountability and proper compensation for the life-altering injuries sustained by the Plateau victims.
