The Plateau State government has renewed its vigorous advocacy for the creation of a state-controlled policing system. This renewed appeal is presented as a essential strategy to confront the unique and persistent security challenges facing the state.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, served as the government’s voice for this initiative during a recent live radio broadcast on Dr Fish FM in Jos.
Her comments directly echoed the consistent position of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who has repeatedly championed state police as a practical and necessary alternative to the existing security framework, which is exclusively controlled by the federal government.
Commissioner Ramnap elaborated on the state’s position, clarifying that while the current administration remains committed to its collaboration with federal security agencies, these efforts are often insufficient for local needs.
She argued that a state police force would fundamentally improve security by bringing it closer to the grassroots level.
The peculiar nature of the security threats within Plateau State, she noted, demands tailored and localised responses that a state police system is uniquely positioned to provide.
Such a force would be better equipped to ensure lasting peace and safety, particularly in vulnerable rural communities.
Alongside this primary call for structural change, the Commissioner assured the public of the government’s continued determination to strengthen security through immediate measures.
These include the strategic deployment of security personnel, enhancing community vigilance programs, and maintaining sustained dialogue with all relevant stakeholders.
Ramnap concluded by urging all residents to actively support the government’s ongoing reforms and to extend their full cooperation to security agencies operating in the state, emphasising that consolidating peace is a shared responsibility.
