52 protesters have been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for allegedly engaging in aggressive behaviour during the state’s #EndBadGovernance event, which got underway on Thursday.

In giving reporters an update on the arrest on Friday, Commissioner of Police Auwal Musa Mohammed said that a policeman had also been hurt during the demonstration.

The arrests, he said, were made for violating public order and unlawful assembly since the protesters had not obtained police authorisation to hold the event.

He said that at the “End Bad Governance Protest” in the state capital, fifty demonstrators—including women—were taken into custody.

Mohammed said:

“Fifty-two protesters were arrested for being violent and unruly. They attempted to disturb public peace, which was not in accordance with our arrangement.”

He disclosed that over 3,000 protesters reassembled after being scattered and tried to break into Government House. He also disclosed that one police officer had been hurt as a result of the protesters turning violent and stealing and destroying property all across the city.

“They were stoning our policemen and injured some of them, so we had to act quickly. The governor would have addressed them if they had not been unruly,” Mohammed added.
