Presidency dismisses opposition coalition as insignificant ahead of 2027 elections

Presidency has dismissed the emerging coalition of opposition figures preparing for the 2027 general elections, describing the movement as exaggerated and lacking substance.

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communications, made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

Bwala argued that the so-called coalition is not a credible threat, stating that only a small fraction of opposition members have joined the effort. “This coalition issue you are hearing is overblown; there is no coalition anywhere,” he said.

“Those who left the PDP, who are the proponents of this coalition, are just a handful of people. The PDP governors have not followed them, and the National Working Committee and national executives have not joined them either.”

He further questioned the viability of the opposition alliance, pointing out internal divisions within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). “Where is the coalition? They are even struggling to find someone to run on the PDP platform,” Bwala added.

The opposition coalition reportedly includes prominent figures such as Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate; Peter Obi of the Labour Party; and Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State.

The group has appointed interim leaders, including former Senate President David Mark as national chairman, ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary, and former Minister of Youth and Sports Bolaji Abdullahi as spokesperson.

Despite these developments, the Presidency remains confident, downplaying the coalition’s potential impact.

Bwala’s comments suggest that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) views the opposition’s efforts as fragmented and unlikely to pose a serious challenge in the upcoming elections. The coming months will test whether the coalition can consolidate its ranks and mount a formidable opposition against the APC.
