President Bola Tinubu has called upon Nigerians living abroad to actively contribute their skills, expertise, and resources to the nation’s development, emphasising that building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria is a collective responsibility.

The President made these remarks on Thursday, August 22, 2025, during an interactive meeting with members of the Nigerian community in Yokohama, Japan, held on the sidelines of the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).

Addressing a diverse group of professionals, entrepreneurs, and students, President Tinubu declared that Nigeria is “on the rise again” under his leadership and highlighted the significant progress made in key areas such as economic stabilisation, passport issuance reforms, and healthcare infrastructure improvements aimed at reducing medical tourism.

He assured the diaspora community that his administration is committed to creating a conducive environment for all citizens, both at home and abroad.

Tinubu reiterated that while it is an individual’s right to choose where to live, Nigeria’s economic growth and expanding opportunities make it imperative for diaspora Nigerians to return and contribute. “Your contribution is very much needed. If you stay away, who will build it?” he asked .

He stressed that national development cannot be achieved by the government alone but requires a shared sense of responsibility and collaboration among all Nigerians.

The President also urged those abroad to act as ambassadors by projecting a positive image of Nigeria internationally.

He cautioned that negative portrayals hinder development and discourage investment, emphasising that citizenship is defined not just by holding a passport but by a genuine commitment to the nation’s progress.

To showcase his administration’s achievements, Tinubu invited the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Suleiman Halilu, to detail government programs. Additionally, testimonials from figures like Wale Tinubu highlighted how recent reforms have boosted business competitiveness and attracted investment.

The meeting concluded with expressions of support from diaspora representatives, who pledged to engage more deeply in Nigeria’s economic and social transformation.
