Pro-Wike lawmakers not State Assembly members – Rivers Govt insists

The 27 members of the state Assembly who remained faithful to former governor Nyesom Wike have been removed from their positions in the State House of Assembly, according to Dagogo Iboroma, the commissioner for justice and attorney general for Rivers State.

According to Iboroma, the lawmakers—led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule—left the PDP last year and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Wednesday, Iboroma stated that, in contrast to what has been reported, the Certified True Copy of a ruling rendered on Monday by the Rivers State High Court affirmed the assertion that Amaewhule and his associates had withdrawn from the PDP and, as a result, had been stripped of their seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

He said:

“The court did not make a declaration that Martin Amaewhule is the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, nor did it make a declaration that Martin Amaewhule and 26 others are members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Peoples Democratic Party.

“If it were so, it would have been embodied in the court orders, which have been circulated to you all and displayed by me here for the purpose of clarity.”

He said that the public had been deceived and misrepresented, and that the court had been given a terrible reputation. He also said that any factual conclusion that is not contained in the court ruling is an Obiter Dictum, meaning it has no legal weight.

“Once again, I respectively urge the media to desist from giving any interpretation to any judgment without first reading the content of the judgment and seeking legal advice,” he added.
