Ahmed Munir, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Commerce, has reaffirmed the commitment of lawmakers to strengthen Nigeria’s export capacity as a means to enhance national revenue.

Representing Lere Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, Munir made this declaration during a working visit to the Kano Free Trade Zone and other industrial facilities in the state on Friday. He explained that the purpose of his visit was to evaluate operational processes, assess service delivery, and review the zone’s role in advancing Nigeria’s industrialisation and export promotion goals.

Established in 1992 under the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority Act, the Kano Free Trade Zone was designed to promote manufacturing, agro-processing, and export-oriented industries in northern Nigeria.

Upon his arrival, Munir was welcomed by Kano State Deputy Governor Alhaji Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo at the Government House, where both leaders discussed strategies to attract foreign direct investment in key sectors such as power, mining, and agriculture to stimulate job creation.

Munir stressed the importance of stronger collaboration between federal and state governments to enhance Kano’s competitiveness in regional and continental trade, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area. He highlighted the need for policies such as tax incentives, low-interest export financing, and trade facilitation measures to improve the global competitiveness of Nigerian goods.

The lawmaker called for urgent revitalisation of the Kano Free Trade Zone to position it as a key player in Nigeria’s export diversification strategy.

He emphasised the need for investments in independent power generation, road rehabilitation, a reliable rail system, and the completion of the AKK Gas Pipeline project. Additionally, he advocated for improved warehousing facilities and consistent policies to rebuild investor confidence.

“Kano possesses the strategic location, historical significance, and skilled workforce to drive Nigeria’s export diversification agenda,” Munir stated. His remarks underscored the legislative push to transform the zone into a hub for economic growth and industrial development.
