Rhodes-Vivour Defects to ADC, Calls for Opposition Unity

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State during the 2023 elections, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The formal declaration ceremony, held in the Alimosho Local Government Area on Saturday, was nearly disrupted by an alleged attempt from suspected political thugs to cause chaos at the gathering.

The presence of a significant number of police operatives at the venue also contributed to a sense of unease among attendees, raising questions about their intent.

Addressing his supporters after being presented with the ADC flag, Rhodes-Vivour was quick to clarify the nature of the event, stating it was a constitutional political meeting and not a campaign rally.

He expressed strong concern over the heavy police deployment, vowing to seek an immediate clarification from the Lagos State Commissioner of Police. He questioned whether the officers were present to provide protection or to intimidate participants and stifle legitimate political activity.

Explaining the reasoning behind his move, the former Labour Party flagbearer stated that his choice of the ADC was driven by the urgent necessity to build a stronger coalition among opposition forces in Nigeria. He emphasized that the fragmentation of opposition parties only benefits the status quo.

Rhodes-Vivour argued that to defeat those who maintain power through thuggery, violence, and intimidation, a robust and unified alliance that truly reflects the will of the people is essential. He warned that without such unity, governance would remain ineffective and the citizenry would continue to be voiceless. Expressing optimism about his new political home, he concluded with a prayer for divine guidance for the ADC’s leadership to chart a new, purposeful course for the nation.
