The political crisis in Rivers State continues as Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, disclosed details of a recent reconciliation attempt made by suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
During a media briefing on Monday, May 12, 2025, Wike revealed that Fubara visited him alongside two governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to seek peace.
Wike expressed doubts about Fubara’s capacity to genuinely pursue reconciliation, pointing out that the governor’s supporters had been acting contrary to the supposed peace efforts. Wike stated that he told Fubara, “I don’t think you have the capacity to really make this peace. It’s not easy; if you’re making peace, your people are demonstrating every day. If you are making peace, your people are busy on television insulting people.”
The meeting came shortly after Fubara publicly appealed to his supporters on Sunday, urging them to avoid actions that could hinder the peace process. The ongoing rift between Wike and Fubara has significantly affected the political landscape of Rivers State, leading to divisions within the State House of Assembly and causing administrative setbacks.
The crisis took a more serious turn when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025. The declaration led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly. Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas (Retired) was appointed as the Sole Administrator to manage the state’s affairs during the six-month suspension.
Despite the federal government’s intervention, tensions remain unresolved as both camps continue to trade accusations and resist reconciliation efforts. The situation highlights the challenges of political mediation and the complexities involved in restoring stability to the state.
