Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, has said that his government plans to transform agriculture using Songhai Farms in the Bunu town of the Tai Local Government Area as a springboard.
Fubara made this statement during an inspection visit to the Songhai Farm, when the Manager, Dr. Sammy Jaja, showed him around several areas of the facility.
This was stated in a press release released to newsmen on Saturday in Port Harcourt by the governor’s media aide, Boniface Onyedi.
According to Fubara, the visit was in response to the choices made at the most recent National Economic Council meeting, where the necessity for economic diversification dominated talks to ease the current financial hardship that the populace is experiencing.
In his words:
“In our last National Economic Council meeting, because of the present situation of our economy, which you are aware; the issue of removal of fuel subsidy and other economic bites affecting everyone.
“Everybody was advised to diversify. The other option is agriculture, and we were all advised to see what we can do to improve on food sufficiency.”
The Governor added that modernising the Songhai Farms will boost food security in the state, diversify the state’s economy, and create employment for the populace significantly.
