Senator Titus Zam, representing Benue North-West, has dismissed calls to honour the late former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, stating that he failed in his service to the nation and does not deserve recognition.
Titus Zam’s remarks come in response to a tribute by the current INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who had advocated for a posthumous recognition of Nwosu.
Yakubu highlighted Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly his introduction of the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot System during his tenure from 1989 to 1993.
Nwosu, who passed away in October 2024, was praised by several prominent Nigerians for his role in electoral reforms. The push for his recognition led to a debate in the Senate.
However, speaking on the Senate floor, Titus Zam disagreed, stating that INEC, as a crucial institution in democracy, always attracts scrutiny—both positive and negative. His opposition underscores the differing opinions among lawmakers regarding Nwosu’s legacy and his impact on Nigeria’s electoral history.
