The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has alerted the public about a sophisticated fraud scheme involving cloned versions of his voice being used to solicit money from unsuspecting victims.
According to a statement released by his office, criminal syndicates have replicated Akume’s voice and are using it to deceive high-profile individuals with false promises of federal government appointments in exchange for payments.
The SGF’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, disclosed that the fraudsters have also cloned phone numbers of prominent personalities to lend credibility to their scams.
“These criminals are impersonating the SGF and other senior officials to defraud members of the public under the guise of facilitating appointments,” the statement read.
George Akume’s office emphasised that the warning follows numerous inquiries from concerned citizens who have been approached by the scammers.
The SGF clarified that neither his office nor any legitimate government agency solicits payments for appointments, urging Nigerians to disregard such fraudulent offers.
The alert highlights the growing sophistication of cybercrime in Nigeria, where voice cloning technology is increasingly being weaponised for financial fraud.
Authorities have advised citizens to verify any suspicious communication directly through official government channels and report fraudulent activities to security agencies. The SGF’s office reaffirmed its commitment to working with law enforcement to track down and prosecute the perpetrators behind the scam.
