The South East Senators Caucus has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to disregard the Senate’s decision against immortalizing the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu and proceed with posthumous honors.
Led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the caucus addressed the media on Thursday following a heated debate that resulted in the rejection of the motion to immortalize Nwosu. Abaribe emphasized that the Senate’s resolution is merely advisory and not binding, insisting that the president should go ahead with the honor.
Professor Humphrey Nwosu, as Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), conducted the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest and freest. The election, won by the late business mogul Moshood Abiola, was later annulled by the military government.
The motion to recognize Nwosu’s contributions was sponsored by Abaribe and other South East senators. However, during Wednesday’s plenary, presided over by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, the motion was rejected due to its presentation under an improper Senate Standing Rule order.
Expressing disappointment, the South East caucus criticized their colleagues from other regions for failing to acknowledge Nwosu’s patriotic role in organizing an election that, despite military interference, set a democratic precedent in Nigeria.
