South Korea’s anti-graft investigators have asked police aid in arresting impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, following a week-long stalemate over his unwillingness to submit for interrogation about his claimed failed martial law effort.
The embattled former prosecutor has evaded several attempts by the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) to arrest him, remaining locked up in his home.
Recall that a previous arrest attempt last week resulted in a heated confrontation, causing detectives to request an extension of the arrest warrant, which is slated to expire Monday.
“We plan to request an extension from the court today,” CIO deputy director Lee Jae-Seung said at a news briefing, adding that they will consult with police on the date of any future attempt.
The case has sparked South Korea’s deepest political crisis in decades. President Yoon Suk Yeol is charged with rebellion for suspending civilian authority, with penalties ranging from jail to execution. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Yoon and his followers remain steadfast in accusing the CIO of overreach.
“The Presidential Security Service will protect President Yoon Suk Yeol, and we will protect the Presidential Security Service until midnight,” said protest organizer Kim Soo-yong.
