35 Nigerian journalists have received training from Spanish professionals in information verification and digital cybersecurity thanks to Casa Africa’s initiative. In cooperation with the Centre for Journalism Innovation & Development, Nigeria, the initiative involved the verification platform Dubawa, the DG Africa of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Spain in Nigeria, and the European Union and Cooperation.
The training occurred in Abuja from July 10 to July 14, 2023, with trainers from Spanish media outlets Maldita.es and Newtral sharing their knowledge and experience with fact-checkers and journalists. Eva Martin, the Cultural Adviser at the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria, released a statement on Thursday.
José Clavell, Director-General of Casa Africa, expressed the organization’s pride in working with Nigerian “to strengthen the capacities of African journalists in fact-checking and digital security.”
“We believe that these skills are essential for quality journalism that can inform citizens and combat misinformation that can undermine democracy and human rights,” Clavell added.
Dr. Tobi Oluwatola, the executive director of the CJID, stated that it was crucial for journalists to take use of the chances that AI has created to alter the course of history.
Juan Sell, the Spanish ambassador to Nigeria, was present for the training’s concluding ceremony and presented the participants’ diplomas.
