SSANU threatens strike over unpaid salaries

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a stern warning to the federal government over the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries.

The union, in a statement released on May 7, 2025, expressed its dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to honour its commitment to pay the outstanding salaries.

SSANU, alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), had previously embarked on a seven-day warning strike to protest the withholding of their members’ salaries.

Despite assurances from the government, the payments have yet to be made, leading to heightened tensions within the university system.

The union has called for immediate action to address the issue, warning that failure to do so will result in a nationwide industrial action.

SSANU emphasised that the continued withholding of salaries is causing significant hardship for its members and undermining the trust between the government and the unions.

The situation remains fluid, with SSANU monitoring the government’s response closely. The union has made it clear that it will not hesitate to take further action if its demands are not met promptly.

This development underscores the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s higher education sector, as unions continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of non-teaching staff.

The outcome of this dispute could have significant implications for the functioning of universities across the country.
