The Federal Government-led administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made five crucial pledges to Nigerian workers on October 1, 2023.
The promises were made at a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, in the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting’s objective was to identify strategies to settle the controversy caused by the elimination of the PMS subsidy.
During the meeting, the Federal Government committed to the following:
1. The Federal Government declared N25,000 (now N35,000) as a six-month interim salary rise for all treasury-paid federal government employees.
2. The federal government is committed to expediting the deployment of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to alleviate the public transportation challenges connected with the elimination of the PMS subsidy.
3. The Federal Government pledges to provide money for micro and small-scale businesses.
4. Diesel VAT will be waived for the next six months.
5. From October to December 2023, the Federal Government would begin paying N75,000 to 15 million families at a monthly rate of N25,000.
The meeting will resume on Monday, October 2, 2023.
