Strike: We won’t resume without payment of our salary arrears – SSANU

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has reiterated that the union’s and NASU’s strike would continue until their demands are satisfied.

SSANU and NASU went on indefinite strike on Monday over the nonpayment of four months’ salary arrears.

Despite appeals for the unions to end the strike, SSANU president Mohammed Ibrahim emphasized that it could only happen if their demands were satisfied.

According to SSANU:

“So, it’s not the issue of meeting. The issue is that we want payment and that every procedure has been followed.

“They can just simply direct this payment and I assure you in less than 24 hours, we can just refer back to our principals and this strike will be suspended.

“Well, assurances are not something that we have not received before. So assurances from politicians and assurances from government officials are not new things to us. But the mandate that we have from our members is that this strike is totally indefinite and that we will only resume when we get the alerts.”

This strike has crippled activity at Nigeria’s public universities, with courses and other facilities closed.

Recall that in March, both unions, SSANU and NASU went on a seven-day warning strike commencing March 18, 2024, for nonpayment of their salary.
